The twin Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity are heading into their fifth year of operation on Mars. Opportunity is in fine shape, but Spirit is starting to show its age, suffering from low power levels, a dead wheel, and instruments which are simply wearing out. Not bad, though, for what was originally planned as a 90-day mission!
The two rovers have already been immortalized by having asteroids named in their honor: 37452 Spirit and 39382 Opportunity. It's safe enough to name celestial bodies after these two awesome explorers, as there's pretty much zero chance that either one will make embarassing remarks on television or turn out to have a shady past.
Congratulations to everyone behind this amazing achievement.
