Chad Orzel put up two photos the other day from his going-to-WorldCon trip through Kyoto, both of which demonstrate the use of framing to guide the eye toward a particular part of the picture. Not to be outdone, here's one I took. Like Chad's photos, it's from the temple complex in northwest Kyoto.
This photo was a bit challenging. I wanted to capture both the temple building and the painting of the tree inside of it. But the roof made the painting niche fairly dark, and the roof tiles reflected a lot of light. My eyes could compensate for the different light levels easily, but the CCD in the camera had a much harder time. It took a long time to find a combination of f-stop and shutter speed that didn't overexpose the roof into a solid white sheet.
