For the past 5 years, Science and NSF have held what they call a "Visualization Challenge." It's not your typical photography contest. For starters, they don't limit the contest to photography; they also judge animations, interactive websites, and poster graphics. And the entries have to be more than just beautiful – they also have to be informative.
The 2007 winners appear in the September 28th issue of Science. They include some breathtakingly-beautiful images, like the rippled computer simulation of a bat's flight and the fractal detail in a piece of Irish moss. You can see the winners here.
